Calorie Counting

/ Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

How many times have you decided on something “healthier” to eat.  Thinking to yourself “Ill get a salad instead of that cheeseburger!”  You load the salad with …

cheese, croutons, veggies, (because you are being healthy) cranberries, nuts and RANCH!

Guess again, because you are doing worse than eating that cheeseburger.  There are 180 calories per OUNCE for ranch. A typical salad has 2-3 ounces of dressing.  That’s 400+ calories for the dressing alone.

1 ounce of nuts (almonds, cashews, etc) are close to 200 calories.

The reason for this dramtic calorie blog is, I downloaded the app called “My Fitness Pal”  Many of you already have this app, but for those of you who do not know what this is… let me explain!

You enter all your info (height, weight, age yada yada)  Then, it sets up a daily calorie goal for you.  You enter everything that you put in your mouth (don’t be gross) and it calculates your calories. It also shows you what kind of nutrients you are getting from the foods you eat.  You can also program your exercise into the app, which will allow for more calories.  Its pretty cool and pretty eye-opening as well.

I have been doing it for 7 days now.  I have noticed a slight difference in my body and my energy level has improved.  It totally makes sense, since I have cut out 2,000 extra calories I was inhaling throughout my day!

Every time I go to eat something now, I pay attention!  Calories, sodium, serving size, protein and SUGAR!  It is so crazy to think that I was eating so healthy, yet eating just as bad, becuase of the calories.

This app was a real slap in the face to healthy eating.  Just because a Cliff bar is good for you, doesnt mean it should be eaten in one sitting (290 calories)

If you have any tips for me while I am on my calorie hideout, please shoot em my way!

I really love this place in Dallas, called “Snappy Salads” but now when I eat there I have to pay attention.  I would get the following salad.

Spring mix, double egg, black olives, walnuts, gorgonzola, croutons and maple vinegerette dressing.. all of that comes to a whopping …. youre not ready for this folks….  1,098 calories… FOR A SALAD!!!!!!!!!!!

I am very careful now when going for the “healthy salad”   I should just grab that burger instead… hahah!

xoxo

Dairy Free is the way to be?

/ Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Ok so…. as of June 1st.. i have been Dairy Free. NO Milk, NO cheese, NO ice cream or yogurt.  I was doing it as a cleanse type thingy. Also wanted to see how i felt and all that yada yada!  Well I am on day 9! I feel really good.  My body is great and is warding off cravings after about a week and a half!  I don't drink milk to begin with (Almond milk is the substitute)  and the only real dairy i consumed was CHEESE… and a lot of it!

I never realized just HOW much cheese I consumed until June 1st.  At the grocery store, checking every ingredient… at restaurants ordering things without cheese or sour cream!  I ate a sh*t load of cheese.  I remember telling my husband, " I don't eat that much dairy to begin with so this might be easy"  He said " are you kidding? you eat ALOT of cheese.. we both do."  The more I thought about what he said the more I believe it now!  I EAT ALOT OF CHEESE!

Whole Foods has been my savior, my light at the end of the tunnel. (dramatic)  I first started off with "Almond Cheese"- cheese made from almonds not milk. WORST IDEA EVER.  The consistency was good but the taste… lets just say it was like bland rubber.  I tried to eat it with a smile on my face but after 3-4 bites down I couldn't anymore.

My second choice was Veggie Slices (made with Soy).  Flavors come in cheddar and pepper jack.  Now this was better.  Comes pre- sliced just like ol' Kraft singles.  It isn't too bad.  I eat meat (don't hate) and I made a burger last night. Slapped 2 pieces of cheddar Veggie Slices on it and chowed down!  It was very good and satisfied my craving.

Now onto sweets.  I'm a HUGE fan of dark chocolate. Not that fake crap called semi-sweet chocolate, but REAL 70% cocao (the stuff that puts hair on your chest) Most dark chocolate isn't made with cream so i'm safe there.  Whole foods sells a brand called "SoDelicious"  These products are made of Coconut milk instead of cow utter milk.  I purchased their Coconut milk ice cream sandwiches which surprisingly were better for you than Tofuttis!  They also make a Coconut milk breakfast yogurt which has the same consistency as regular yogurt and tastes great with granola and fruit!

I will make an update when I finish my Dairy Free diet. I was going to do it for 2 weeks but i'm starting to feel really good so I am extending it to a month.  July 1st I will see if I will continue to be dairy free or if ill slide back into a cheese coma.

to be continued….

here is a website i found .. for research and crap
